Advanced Manufacturing Machining Engineer

Purpose

This role serves as the technical bridge between design/manufacturing engineers and the machine shop, with a core focus on developing scalable, high-reliability machining processes. The CNC Machining Engineer is responsible for driving machining improvements, solving complex machining challenges, and help guide parts through the machine shop. Rather than simply supporting products, this engineer leads process innovation enabling rapid iteration, increasing shop efficiency, and helping scale Divergent's machining capabilities to meet program demands.

The Role

As a CNC Machining Engineer on the Advance Manufacturing team, you will lead the development, execution, and continuous improvement of day-to-day CNC machining operations. You'll be one of the primary technical resources supporting the machine shop with troubleshooting production issues, refining machining processes, and enabling scalability through smart programming, tooling/fixturing, and machining workflow design. This role is hands-on, fast-paced, and essential to delivering high-precision, high-reliability hardware across automotive, aerospace, and defense programs.

Key Responsibilities

• Own daily machining execution, working directly with machinists and programmers to resolve issues, optimize setups, and ensure steady throughput.
• Serve as the go-to resource on the machine shop floor for troubleshooting, setup optimization, and execution support.
• Develop and implement probing routines, work offset strategies, and machine calibration procedures to reduce setup time and improve repeatability.
• Monitor machine utilization and WIP flow through the machining work center, help push/pull work as needed to maintain alignment with production targets.

CNC Programming & Technical Execution

• Collaborate on or lead programming for 3-axis, 3+2, and 5-axis CNC mills using Siemens NX CAM software.
• Apply advanced understanding of GD&T, tooling, feeds/speeds, and fixturing to deliver robust, efficient programs.
• Introduce standardized machining strategies, programming conventions, and setup documentation to improve consistency and reduce cycle time.

Process Development & Scalability

• Help lead efforts to integrate new machines, tools, and fixturing into production; support commissioning and readiness for both new and existing products.
• Co-drive design-for-manufacturing (DFM) conversations with Manufacturing engineering to improve part manufacturability and reduce complexity at the machine.

Tooling, Fixturing, and Innovation

• Develop and implement innovative fixturing strategies tailored for complex additive manufactured geometries.
• Evaluate and optimize tool selection, tool life, and changeover strategies to balance quality, cost, and cycle time.
• Support integration of automated machining technologies, including automated loading, pallet changers, Automated Part Alignment, in-process probing, & post machine inspection to enhance scalability and precision.

Continuous Improvement & Documentation

• Analyze machining data to identify trends, inefficiencies, and root causes of scrap or delays; implement corrective actions and process improvements.
• Create and maintain detailed documentation, including setup sheets, tool lists, and process parameters, to ensure consistency and repeatability across shifts and teams.
• Collaborate with software and data teams to integrate production metrics and feedback loops into real-time dashboards and planning systems.

Basic Qualifications

• Ability to lawfully access information and technology that is subject to US export controls
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience
• Exposure to aerospace or defense industries.
• 5+ years of experience in CNC machining and process development, including multi-axis milling.
• Proficiency in CAD/CAM software (e.g., Siemens NX, AutoCAD)
• Advanced understanding of machining processes, GD&T, tooling, and fixturing.
• Experience evaluating, selecting and commissioning CNC machines to meet manufacturing capabilities.
• Knowledge of metrology and automated dimensional inspection techniques.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to innovate in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with advanced manufacturing techniques, including additive manufacturing, robotics, or automation.
• Master's degree in mechanical, manufacturing, or aerospace engineering.
• Ability to work on multiple projects and initiatives in parallel.
• Experience with robotic machining systems and calibration methodologies

Work Environment

• This is a hands-on position that will require standing for long durations of your day and working directly with hardware on the floor.
• Must be comfortable stooping, bending, and standing.
• Position may require occasional travel, long hours or weekend work.

Compensation

At Divergent, our pay range is based on the level of the job. For this role, we will consider candidates at levels E04 - E05 as evaluated through our interview process.

• Engineer / E04: $106,000 - $145,750
• Senior / E05: $122,400 - $168,300

Pay Range $106,000 - $168,300 USD
