Recruitment Timeline:

  • We'll review applications as they come in. We will conduct a final review by July 31, 2025 at 04:00PM 
  • Interview and Selection Process: We have two interviews total 
    • Panel Interview - typically our first step, we conduct an interview between the selected applicant and members of City staff the applicant may work with. We try to give one-two weeks notice to schedule this. 
    • Department Head Interview - typically our last step, we will have top candidates from the panel interview process interview one-on-one with the Department Head. This usually takes place one-two weeks after the panel interview. From here, the Department Head will make the hiring recommendation.
    • For applicants out of the area (3 hours travel), you can request a video interview, which is approved on a case by case basis, but note that we typically require applicants to come in person for at least one of the interviews.
  • The top applicant that receives the hiring recommendation and accepts the conditional offer must successfully complete the background. For this position, it is an employment and education verification, criminal records check (FBI Fingerprinting), and a credit check (you will be provided information about the FCRA). The next step would be to confirm the offer and work together on a start date. 
The City has one vacancy that this recruitment is attempting to fill. We do not have a firm start date in mind and would plan on working with the top candidate to arrive at a mutually agreed upon date. The position may be closed at any time during the process.

As our new Senior Accountant, you’ll provide the financial expertise and accountability that help keep the City’s programs running smoothly and responsibly. This position offers a unique opportunity to support high-impact work across departments and help ensure public funds are spent wisely and transparently.

The Role

We’re looking for someone who enjoys doing meaningful, hands-on accounting work. The ideal candidate is an experienced accounting professional who thrives on digging into the details, solving complex problems, and seeing how their work fits into the big picture. In this role, you’ll be the go-to person for high-level accounting support and financial reporting. You won’t just be reviewing numbers—you’ll be interpreting them, explaining them, and using them to improve the City’s operations. You’ll work closely with the Assistant City Manager to shape priorities, recommend process improvements, and guide the financial direction of the organization.

As Senior Accountant, your key responsibilities will include:

  1. Leading the City’s annual audit process, including coordination with external auditors and preparation of required documentation.
  2. Performing advanced accounting work, including reconciliations, journal entries, and general ledger review.
  3. Developing financial reports and projections that help guide decision-making across departments.
  4. Assisting with the preparation of the City’s budget and supporting departments with budget monitoring and reporting.
  5. Ensuring compliance with accounting standards, internal controls, and applicable laws and regulations.
  6. Reviewing and verifying accounting records related to accounts payable, payroll, utility billing, and more.
  7. Coordinating capital project tracking, asset management, and grant reporting requirements.
  8. Providing input and recommendations on financial policies, procedures, and efficiencies.
  9. Supporting the Assistant City Manager with strategic initiatives and special projects.
  10. Serving as a resource to team members in utility billing, A/P, payroll, and other key financial functions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, business administration, or related field; and
  • At least 7 years of increasingly responsible experience in an accounting or finance position related to this position; or
  • Any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the essential functions described above.

Special Qualifications or Licenses

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Certification.

Preferred Qualifications 

Applicants for this position possessing one or more of the following knowledge, skills, abilities, or experience will receive preferred consideration through the selection process.

  • Possess Master’s degree in accounting or finance.
  • Knowledge and experience with Tyler Technologies (formerly Munis) accounting software. 
  • Experience working for a government agency or not-for-profit, including government accounting or working as a municipal auditor.
